David Cauthen received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Auburn University in 1957 and was awarded a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1964 from the University of Alabama School of Law.
He practiced trial law in Decatur and throughout the North Alabama area for thirty-eight years. His practice specialized in personal injury, criminal law, and domestic relations litigation.
In 2001, he retired from law practice to write. He has authored three legal thriller novels, Absolute Justice (published in 2007), Thumbs Down (published in 2011), and completed Conscious Disregard (to be published soon). He also has written and has published his autobiography, When Destiny Comes to a Fork in the Road, in 2013.

He and Barbara, his wife, reside near Decatur on a farm where their children and grandchildren care for and ride several horses and Elvis, a lovable donkey.
